Monology on the blackboard

ヘンリエッタ・ラックス、1951年に子宮頚癌で亡くなった黒人女性である。その名前を耳にしても、彼女のことを知っているものは数少ない。しかし、ヒーラ細胞と呼ばれる彼女の細胞は、科学者の間では知らぬ者がいないほどの、世界一有名な細胞である。

彼女の身体から採取された癌細胞は、医学界に大きなインパクトを与えた。それまでの数十年間、科学者たちはヒト細胞を培養化で生き続けさせようと奮闘してきたが、一度として成功したためしはなかったのだ。しかし、ヘンリエッタ・ラックスの細胞は、24時間ごとに自らの完全な複製を生み出し、とどまることがなかった。かくしてヒーラ細胞は、世界で初めて研究室内で培養された不死のヒト細胞となったのである。

人類の究極の夢、不老不死。その魅惑に取りつかれた者は、英雄達の中にも数多い。始皇帝、織田信長、サン・ジェルマン伯爵、ナポレオン。不死細胞ヒーラを取り巻く、壮絶な人間模様も、人類の不老不死への憧れと無縁ではないだろう。

ただの癌細胞でありながら、ここまでヒーラ細胞が役立った理由は、正常細胞の基本的性質を数多く供えていたからである。ヒーラ細胞は、正常細胞と同じように、たんぱく質を生成し、互いに情報をやり取りし、分裂時にエネルギーを生み出し、遺伝子の発現とその制御を取り行う。今までに培養されてきたヒーラ細胞をすべてつなぎ合わせると、地球三周はすると見積もる科学者もいる。その不死性を武器に、ポリオのワクチン、化学療法、クローン作製、遺伝子マッピング、体外受精をはじめとする医学の重要な進歩に大きく貢献し、はては無重力空間でのヒト細胞のふるまいを調べるために、初期の宇宙ロケットにも積まれたという。
