この本を読んで、まず驚くのは、イギリスでは17世紀になるまで食事をするのにフォークが使われていなかったということです。それより早いイタリアでも14世紀にようやく、フランスでは16世紀になってフォークを使った食事が行われるようになったというのです。
中国や日本など、東アジアではとうに箸を使った食事が行われていた時期です。

では、それまで西洋ではどうやって食事をしていたのか？
なんと両手にナイフをもって食事をしていたんですね。
